Gwen Stefani may be a superstar pop singer, hit songwriter, fashion maven and role model for millions of girls and young women, but on a brutally hot afternoon recently, on a loading dock outside a largely empty sports arena in Ontario, Calif., she was just a mom, trying to keep her 3-year-old son entertained while she took on an impromptu decorating project.

"I don't have time to do this, but you know me -- once I get obsessed with something," Stefani said while splattering globs of sky blue, neon orange and electric pink paint across three large squares of white fabric. She and a couple friends were creating tapestries to hang in the backstage dressing rooms during the first full-scale concert tour in seven years by No Doubt, the once-scrappy ska-rock group that became one of the biggest-selling pop music acts of the 1990s and early 2000s.

Nearby, Kingston James McGregor Rossdale, the first of Stefani's two kids with rock star hubby Gavin Rossdale, frolicked over a separate sheet of material reserved for him. Eager to include his 8-month-old brother, Zuma, in the fun, James (as Stefani usually calls him) plopped his hands on his young sibling's head.

Inside the new Citizens Business Bank Arena a short time later, Stefani, bassist Tony Kanal, guitarist Tom Dumont and drummer Adrian Young were showing pretty much the same childlike exuberance and energy as they bounced around the gleaming white retro-futuristic stage set they were trying out for the first time. The tour arrives for two local shows this week: Friday at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ, and Saturday at Jones Beach Theater on Long Island.

After a group hiatus of five years during which Stefani put out two multimillion-selling solo albums, "Love. Angel. Music. Baby" and "The Sweet Escape," No Doubt is back. During the break, many fans wondered whether Stefani's solo career would mean the end of the road for the Orange County, Calif., band that launched her, but in Stefani's mind there was always No Doubt.

"The day I got home after my tour ended last year, I wanted to do a photo shoot with the group -- I thought it was an important thing to do," Stefani, 39, said during a lull in the show rehearsals. "This is what I told the guys: The plan was, I wanted to do the dance record, go on the tour, come home and get pregnant -- since I'm a pro at it now, because I did it before," she said with a laugh, before elaborating on her plan. "I'll write the record while I'm pregnant, then after I have the baby, we'll go on tour and we'll have a new No Doubt record. It'll be amazing."

All but one part of that plan has worked out. Musical inspiration for Stefani, the main songwriter of such No Doubt hits as "Don't Speak," "Ex-Girlfriend," "Just a Girl" and "Underneath It All," just wasn't there after she and Rossdale became expectant parents for the second time.

"It totally didn't work," Stefani said. "I don't know how other women feel, but I lose connection with myself because my body becomes this vessel for this other human. Even after a few months you don't have your body back -- you're not yourself. I was feeling not very modern, not very creative."

After a few months of fruitless writing sessions, Stefani, Kanal, Dumont and Young decided the best thing they could do to get the creative juices flowing was to follow the path that had first served them so well: Go out and play.

Disbanding "was never discussed," Dumont, 40, said. "In fact, it was specifically discussed as, 'Let's not be one of these bands that breaks up and gets back together.' We don't hate each other -- it's just time for a break. Gwen had some real specific things she wanted to do with the time."

The last time No Doubt toured was in 2004, performing about a dozen shows in conjunction with a hits compilation, "The Singles: 1992-2003." It was 2002 when the group last mounted a full-scale concert tour, following the 2001 release of its last studio album, "Rock Steady."

That's when Stefani realized she had some career steps to take outside the parameters of the band she joined as a teenager, entering the group as "Just a Girl" singer before taking over the role of chief songwriter after her older brother, Eric, left the band to pursue his dream career as an animator for "The Simpsons."

Following No Doubt's 2004 tour, she intended to put out just one, as she often called it, "stupid dance record" on her own. "Love. Angel. Music. Baby." sold 4 million copies in the United States and yielded hit singles "Hollaback Girl," "What You Waiting For" and "Cool."

What she hadn't figured on was doing a follow-up, which left No Doubt in limbo a couple years longer than the musicians had anticipated. During that time, Stefani also launched her phenomenally popular L.A.M.B. fashion line.

"All I know how to do is follow my inspiration," Stefani said in a separate interview in her dressing room. "That's why I did those dance records -- it's where I wanted to be. I really didn't plan to do the second one. I felt guilty about it, and it was a real scary conversation to say, 'Listen guys, I feel like I'm this close to another one, it's really what I want to do right now.' They were really so supportive, and thank God I did it, because that tour was so rewarding, such a great thing for me to do.

"But as soon as I finished that second record -- literally it was during mastering of that record -- I was like, 'I know I need to do another No Doubt record now. I'm done with this [solo work].' "

While their celebrity bandmate toured and appeared on one magazine cover and TV talk show after another, Kanal, Dumont and Young kept busy. Kanal collaborated with other songwriters. He and Dumont produced recordings for other artists. Young kept up his drum chops playing with a variety of bands on the road and in the studio.

Dumont and Young also started families, something Kanal and his girlfriend of six years hope to do as well.

"For the first time ever, we have our own buses," Kanal said. "That's purely out of necessity, because Gwen's got her nannies and the babies on her bus, and Tom has his wife and his nanny and baby, and Adrian his wife, nanny and their son. That's going to be an interesting dynamic, a little bit of a change, by default. It'll be interesting to see how all that plays out."

No Doubt is finding it illuminating to pick up where the group left off five years ago. During the band's headlining set at the Bamboozle Festival at the Meadowlands in May, Stefani asked how many in the crowd were seeing the group for the first time.

"I was just in so much shock by the amount of hands that went up," Stefani said. "I'm still sort of like: Did they understand the question? Because it was like the whole audience. I still don't know if maybe they heard me wrong or what, but it was kind of exciting."

All four band members say they aren't interested in milking the nostalgia circuit and that they consider this tour a stepping stone in the creative process, much like the way they operated in the beginning, before their 1995 album, "Tragic Kingdom," transformed them into one of the world's most popular acts.

"It feels so much more right than I thought it was going to feel," Stefani said. "Physically it feels right -- I feel powerful again, I feel modern again. And I have my little baby, and everything feels so great in that kind of way. And on top of that, the welcome we're getting -- we're feeling bigger than we've ever been." -- Los Angeles Times

For guitarist Tom Dumont, there was No Doubt about band getting back together

When lead singer Gwen Stefani was enjoying that prosperous and successful solo career of hers from 2004 to 2008, did guitarist Tom Dumont remain convinced that the old band would come back together?

No doubt.

Dumont says during a phone interview at a tour stop in Philadelphia last week that he was convinced that Stefani would make good on her word and come back to No Doubt.

"We took the break. It ended up being longer than we expected," Dumont says. "But for 21 years I've been in the band now and we know each other so well. It was understood among the four of us that 'Gwen's doing her thing.' It was not a break-up."

Sure enough, Stefani called her old friends at the end of her 2007.

"She said, 'let's do this,'¤" Dumont recalls.

They started hanging out in early 2008. "It was getting reacquainted," he says, "and knowing each other and making up for lost time."

The No Doubt's-back tour hits the

Turning Stone Resort and Casino Event Center on Monday. That's where Stefani turned in a fine December 2005 performance that won over the crowd with her solo hit "Hollaback Girl" and much, much more.

Any jealousy about her success without him at her side?

"Not about a specific song," Dumont says. "But all the emotions got involved. That's a natural condition of the situation. But envy is not something I subscribe to."

Indeed, Dumont says, the hiatus made No Doubt a better band in the end.

"The great thing that happened, and I think it was a healthy thing, is that we matured," Dumont says. "When we started, Gwen was a teenager. So was Tony (Kanal, bassist). To finally have that break and have each of us stand alone as artists was a healthy thing."

Dumont had his own project, Invincible Overlord. He also produced the CD "Songs We Sing" by Matt Costa.

More importantly, he says, "I started a family. I stood as a man myself."

He says the live show has come together splendidly.

"The second concert, the Bamboozle Fest in New Jersey, we nailed it in front of 40,000 people," Dumont says. "There's that instant gratification you get from the audience."

Sometime after the tour, they'll make another studio album.

Don't expect it to be exactly like "Tragic Kingdom," "Return of Saturn" or "Rock Steady."

"That's true. It's one of the reasons why it's always been a challenge to make albums for us. We're constantly growing. What's exciting is we have a blank canvas to paint on."

Fans of all ages, including my parents(!) flocked to the ACC earlier this week to catch Ms. Gwen Stefani reunite with the ever catchy, NO DOUBT. Playing only their past hits with a few covers, the band came out to see their fans and not for a quick cash grab as some might say. And for the fans, the timing of this tour couldn't have been better: the entire venue was in the band's hand, singing and dancing along to all their favourite songs.

Kicking off the high energy show with Spiderwebs, the band, consisting of all original members brought us back to the late 1990s in a flash. Bopping around the stage, taking turns dancing with guitarist Tom Dumont and bassist, Tony Kanal, Gwen has totally earned her great physic including those abs-WOW!
I bet every 30 something woman in attendance wished they could look that good after 2 kids.

Early on in the show, Gwen drew the crowd's attention to a guy in the front with a No Doubt tattoo. With her eyes on the crowd, she pulled up a random dude with a placard containing the lyrics to "Let's Get Back". Unplanned, she began singing, while he danced up a storm around her, till she noticed he had the wrong lyrics (!) and the song and his dance moves were cut short. Take note, re-forming bands, Gwen and her crew know how to connect with their audience, even in a huge stadium. The clean, shiny white stage and a UFO-like riser for drummer, Adrian Young made the band look even slicker on stage. Add to that, a huge video screen playing their actual videos in-sync with the songs and three costume changes by Gwen, they couldn't go wrong

Paying a visit to the nation’s capital, Gwen Stefani took time out of her busy tour schedule to take sons Kingston and Zuma out sightseeing in Washington DC on Monday (June 15).

Included in the group’s morning outing was a tour of the White House, of which the whole family seemed quite excited to visit the Obama household.

As for trying to juggle her No Doubt tour and motherhood, Stefani told Elle magazine, “Maybe once I sleep through the night, I’ll be able to write a song. That’s where I’m at.”

“Now I’m a wife and a mother of two. It’s a really different role,” she adds. “My priorities are always going to be my husband and my family now. That’s a huge, huge thing.”

Tuesday night, No Doubt came to the Ford Amphitheatre in Tampa as part of their 2009 summer concert tour. Being a typical Florida summer, it poured. People that arrived there early were now stuck in the mud, and getting splashed by incoming cars, but that did not stop the people from piling in. It was hot and muggy, but No Doubt was worth every drop of sweat and splash of mud that my body encountered.

No Doubt came in strong, opening with their 1996 hit single Spider Webs. Nothing like kicking off a concert with 20,000 people singing with you, right? Gwen Stefani, who despite being 39, looks incredible and has more performance endurance than I have seen in other top artists. Gwen told the audience that No Doubt was there to get inspired for their next album, and they just wanted people to sing and have a good time. Well, myself and 20,000 others, certainly did. Gwen also thanked the audience for coming out in the torrential downpour, saying that she has no words to express how it feels playing in front of an audience this huge, who all sang the words to each of their songs.

The band also made sure to recognize us “slushies” as Gwen called us, those of us who were on the lawn and were sloshing around ankle deep in mud. We could care less though, cause we were there for No Doubt! It was one of the best concerts I have ever been to. No Doubt clearly loves what they do and their impeccable performance really displayed what a fantastic band they are. Gwen’s vocals were incredible, and they sounded better than their albums, which is not something I have ever experienced at a concert.

They were very appreciative too, shouting out to the “slushies” several times, calling out to fans with signs, pulling fans up on stage, grabbing fans cameras and taking pictures with them. Gwen even pulled one guy up on stage, telling him to “shut the f#@k up!” as he had No Doubt tattooed across his back. He looked as if he might have an aneurysm after Gwen gave him a big hug. She hugged every fan she pulled up, not caring that we were all sweating out every toxin in our body in the sweltering 85% humidity, and were also drenched from the downpour. From what I hear of their other concerts, she is like this all the time – really relating to the fans and being very appreciative of their support. She even gets down in the crowd for some of the venues that have easy access back and forth. You can check out videos of that below.

All in all it was amazing to see a band that I grew up with still kicking butt and remembering who made them. I would do it all over again and I can guarantee it will not be my last No Doubt concert. I sure hope they got the inspiration they needed because I left there totally enthused by their brilliant performance.

A sold-out crowd of 20,000 braved the slush, rain and a graduation at the fairgrounds to see No Doubt at the Ford Amphitheatre Tuesday night -- and what they got was 90 minutes of chart-topping hits and high-energy ska.

"The 39-year-old Stefani was a shimmering, aerobicizing wonder, swaggery but sweet," writes Sean Daly. "Opening with 1995's Spiderwebs, the band was tight and amped, decked out in white and hopping and bopping on a Space Age stage that looked like LAX."

TAMPA — It's been a long time since Gwen Stefani was just a girl fronting a spazzy, party-minded rock crew. After she ditched the dudes in No Doubt in 2004, the former tomboy became a solo starlet and a fashion designer and a celebu-mom. No more thrashy ska for her; Gwennie was shiny, sparkly, new.

But on the biggest reunion tour of the summer, the platinum-topped singer is pulling off the princess heels, pulling on the old tank tops. Everything was in place at the No Doubt gig at Ford Amphitheatre on Tuesday: The guys in the band were jacked to be cashing checks again. And a sold-out crowd of 20,000 stuffed the rain-soaked venue (although many reportedly arrived late and cranky due to a storm, an accident on Interstate 4 and a graduation at the fairgrounds).

Could Stefani slip back into her old role? If a recent performance on American Idol was any indication — yikes! On Idol, the song Just a Girl came off more like a Saturday Night Live parody of No Doubt, with perhaps Andy Samberg playing an unsure housewife desperate to fit in with the cool kids.

But you know what? Per usual, I blame Ryan Seacrest for everything. Leaving her solo hits off the set list, and sticking mainly to No Doubt staples, the 39-year-old Stefani was a shimmering, aerobicizing wonder, swaggery but sweet. Opening with 1995's Spiderwebs, the band was tight and amped, decked out in white and hopping and bopping on a Space Age stage that looked like LAX.

"We're here because we want to be inspired," said the superheroically fit singer. The quartet is planning on recording a new album after the tour. But they sure didn't seem bored with the oldies. Fueled by mohawked drummer Adrian Young, and backed by extra horns and keyboards, they spent 90 ska-strong minutes uncorking chart-toppers: Hella Good, Hey Baby, Don't Speak.

For the ballad Simple Kind of Life, written way back in 2000, Stefani dreamily crooned of being a wife and a mom amid rock-star turmoil. The crowd cheered throughout, fully embracing Gwen both old and new. And like a good mama, in return she constantly checked on the "slushies" in the lawn seating, who bounced all night despite their soggy, smelly shoes.

No Doubt had two female-led, boy-backed opening acts: Swedish New Wavers the Sounds and American It Band Paramore, the Grammy-nominated group that's white-hot with the Twilight set. As a money-making move, bringing those groups along was smart. But as an artistic move, it was even smarter. Seeing the young gals rock 'n' rule has obviously helped Gwennie get her groove back.
